How can a plant have multiple stems?
Where do they all grow from? Is this what is known as a "clump?" Do they all grow from the same main stem? Are the other stems offshoots? When you see a seedling sprouting, there is a single stem - where do the others come from? When dividing, how come the stems do not all snap off? How can multiple stems all have roots if they are all attached?
If bulbs produce other bulbs attached to themselves, surely this means that the resulting multi-stemmed plant is actually several individual plants and not one single plant?
Herbaceous plants have a basal region called a crown they regrow from. The crown can form basal breaks. This means there is a region of meristem that has the potential to form new stems as the plant ages. This way the plant grows larger by growing broader as it ages rather than taller like a tree that has just one stem.
Herbaceous plants like a hosta have growth 'eyes' or buds across the crown that will each produce another stem when the plant breaks dormancy. If the plant is dug up and all soil washed from the root clump when the first shoots break the soil surface in spring it is easy to divide the 'eyes' with out damaging the still furled leaves.
As herbaceous plants age they grow more 'eyes'. A 5 year old Hosta may contain 4, 5, & maybe more eyes if it is in optimal conditions with no predation by deer or slugs.
Herbaceous root division requires that a bud (or eye) be included in each piece to be able to regrow.
Dig around the clump about 6 inches out from the crown where all the stems emerge from the ground. Pop it out including a deep ball of soil from beneath the plant.
Begin dividing the clump by washing the roots in a bucket of water or with a hose end sprayer. If you have a soil sieve/screen set it up supported between two buckets. You can set the plant on the soil sieve and wash the soil off.
The next step, after cleaning the dirt off of the roots, is to pull any easily removable stems or "eyes" from the crown.
If you cannot break the clump apart, a sharp knife will have to be used. Remember, since you want to keep as many roots and leaves as possible, make your cuts through the crown, but not into the roots.
Never let the roots dry while handling the plant. If you cannot plant them right away, place some moist soil or peat moss on the roots and put them in dense shade if it is warm out.
